Valerie Wernet

BUSINESS MANAGER & CHIEF PROBLEM SOLVER
(she/her/they)

I’m a poet & baker with a background in making small businesses more efficient, happier places. Like many people, my introduction to midwifery came with the birth of own child. I recently relocated to the Traditional Territories of the Esquimalt and Songhees Nations from Klahoose and Tla’amin Territory. I’m happy to be making my life here with my fabulous writer of a spouse, our curious almost-three-year-old and a nervous yet soulful Scottie dog named Gorse.

HEAD CLINIC BEAUTIFIER
(she/her)

Being a part of such a beautiful clinic really warms my heart. As someone who was very young when I had my daughter, I know how hard it is to navigate the system and care for your child while keeping everything else together. I found it very hard to find support at the young age of 17. That was 26 yrs ago, and I am very grateful that pregnancy and birth care in BC now includes midwifery.

  • It warms my heart when I hear about the visits clients have at the clinic. I love knowing that families are getting the  support they need to grow with their wee one.

It makes me feel good when I'm able to lend a hand to make someone's life a wee bit easier. I believe that a soft, gentle approach in life makes everyone's life a little less chaotic. If I am able to help, even with the slightest thing, it makes me feel connected. It makes me feel like I am being the change I want to see.

I heard a saying once and it has stuck with me ever since: "We are spiritual beings, having a human experience." Welcoming a new being into the world is definitely one of the most Spiritual experiences I can think of. I heard from a young age that  it takes a village to raise a child, and I have always believed that to be true. It makes me very happy when I'm able to be surrounded by people like the folks at Rosehips, who genuinely care about making the world a better place for themselves and others

As a young mom, I found it very hard to find connection. I loved my baby but it was so hard being on our own 24/7. I tried Mom & Tot groups, but the age gap was too big. At this point in my life, I'm interested in connecting people, helping and sharing so they feel connected and supported. If we can find time for self care, we can all better care for others.
